When I Say "Just a Trim," I Mean "Just a Trim"!

Dear Krissy,
I have very long hair and occasionally like to have it trimmed. I have gone to hair stylists before and they typically cut too much off. Now, I'm nervous to have anyone touch my hair.

What is a good way to communicate with a hair stylist to make sure that I get what "I" want, and not what the hair stylist wants?

Ruth, Fort Myers

Dear Ruth,
Communication is the key word in your question. Any time you go in for a service, be specific about what you want upfront. Lay down your "ground rules" with very clear and very concise directions -- "this is what I want..." (only an inch off, etc.) -- and ask the hair stylist before she starts if she understands your request. Ask her to repeat it to you to make sure that you are both on the same page. Remember not to let one bad experience scare you off, though, because your next experience may become just the one that you're looking for!
